Friday 29 June – Fashion, trends and…patience?!
I’ve just spent almost four hours sitting in an airport; no WiFi and conflicting flight-delay information. Factor in ‘too many people’ – ensuring the place felt airless and hot – and you’ll possibly agree it hardly makes for the best start to a weekend break, yet I (unusually) don’t feel too stressed or frustrated.
Maybe, at the ripe old age of 61, I am realising that there is just not a lot of point in allowing myself to feel anything other than happy or content? Remind me of that next time I’m yelling about something!
Currently somewhere over France I’m alternating between flicking through a free magazine, titled, ‘Stylist’, and enjoying a spot of writing. I had planned to read a book written by a friend of mine, forgetting the need to be online to access it via Dropbox. Drat!
Whilst reading this magazine, a couple of features caught my eye. Apparently, it is currently fashionable to make a ‘personal statement’ by using a technique called, ‘Facial Embellishment’. In a nutshell this means adding glitter, temporary tattoos (I used to call them transfers, as a child) and gems to your face.
The fashion journalist writes, ‘Add to the outer eye corners’. This took me way back to circa 1971 when I painted little flowers on the area around my outer eyes and on my cheekbones! I think it was also the era when I wore loons – flared jeans with pieces of material added to make the flare wider – and a cowbell!
The second article featured a photo of a model wearing several shades of blue and pink eyeshadows, which were blended and then winged outwards. The photo reminded me of an old school friend who, even now, wears this so called, ’Technicolour Dreamer’, look.
I wonder if my friend knows she’s a trendsetter?
Fashion and trends always interest me, even though I don’t particularly follow them. It’s funny how the same old things come around again and again. Wedge heels, make-up looks, maxi dresses, mini skirts, midi-coats, I could go on and on. I just hope huge shoulder pads don’t come back in the next twenty years!
Out of interest, are there any trends/looks that YOU love or hate? My current pet hate is the ‘Cold Shoulder’ trend. The look I absolutely love is the ‘Red Lip’ which I think goes back to seeing one of my Aunts wear it so well in the 1960’s!
P.S. If you are wondering about the title of this post, I’ve two young Spanish lads sitting next to me (aged about twelve) who are traveling alone. Boy, are they loud? I can’t help but laugh though, as they are practising their English and keep bursting into laughter themselves – it’s quite infectious but a tad annoying so I am trying my best to stay patient! 🤫
