Cottages and Caravans!
As some of you might know from previous blogs, we are mid-renovating our cottage. More than renovating we are reconfiguring the place and I am in a love-hate period just now!
I love, love, love the new stairs; instead of taking you up a straight staircase they curve at the top to take you onto a square landing. The old stairs took you to a corridor – I do detest closed in or narrow spaces. I love, love, love, the larger kitchen/dining/living area; my OH and I love entertaining and it’ll be nice to be able to chat to friends as I cook.
I hate, hate, hate the dust; the never ending dust. You feel it in your hair, in your clothes and on the poor old pooch; Martha is having to have regular showers as she scratches like crazy when her fur is clogged.
I hate, hate, hate the fact that I cannot find anything (I lose things normally so this is nothing new really). The two rooms not yet affected (lounge and main bedroom) by building works look like a hoarders house – really!
Luckily, we have our trusty caravan on the drive. We lived in this for three years whilst travelling Europe so it is a mini-home which enables me to shower in a super-clean space. I have also commandeered the caravan as my working space and what a revelation it has been. I said to Tom this morning, ‘Actually this makes a fabulous work space, I can see the garden, work in peace and generally feel good in here’.
So, guess what? Even when the house is finished I shall be trotting over to the caravan to work and write. Who would have guessed that renovating the cottage would have made me fall in love with the caravan all over again?
P.S. We are not doing the physical renovations ourselves, although Tom is doing bits and pieces: our son’s company are doing the work and they are doing a fabulous job. Look up Reddibuild Construction Ltd but be prepared for a wait as they are super-busy and always booked up for a good while ahead.
