Have I got a problem?
I always used to say I didn’t like Gin; in fact I was 60 years young when I first drank a G & T. I felt very grown up. Let me explain why I ‘thought’ I couldn’t stomach Gin.
One Boxing Day, (when I was aged about 6) I was at a big family do for my cousin ‘N’s birthday (‘N’ would have been about 3 years old I guess). Several aunts and uncles and a contingent of cousins would get together every Boxing Day, to celebrate both Christmas and ‘N’s birthday.
This particular party sticks in my mind because, being terribly thirsty due to running around mad with several cousins, I picked up my mum’s ‘Gin and Orange’ instead of my own glass of orange squash and took a huge glug.
Oh. My. Gosh. It was absolutely disgusting and I couldn’t get rid of the sour taste for ages: the memory of that taste has stayed with me for some 50 odd years.
To cut a long story short I was at the RSC in Stratford-on-Avon with my friend ‘H’ when she persuaded me to try her G&T. I explained my reluctance to try one, recounting the horrid taste of my mums Gin and Orange, and ‘H’ said something like, ‘Oh, Gin and Tonic is nothing like a Gin and Orange, I can understand why you wouldn’t like a Gin and Orange’.
I tried her G&T (Bombay Sapphire and Schweppes Tonic) and…loved it. It was soooo refreshing.
Ever since, I have been a G&T drinker. I really don’t think I’m a big drinker but I have held a couple of ‘Gin Evenings’ at home for different groups of friends, and I like to try different flavours. I guess I do enjoy a gin 5 out of 7 evenings at home around 9pm but that’s not too bad…is it?
However, it appears my friends think I’ve become a bit of a lush since discovering Gin. This Christmas I received several Gin-related gifts.
Hey ho, I’m happy to continue my relationship with my fairly-new found friend…in fact, it’s really only just beGINning!
Ajolopies for the bad joke,
It’s Just (this) Girl’s Thing. Or could it be the start of ‘Mother’s Ruin’ – or am I ‘VirGIN’ (misspelt purposely) on the ridiculous. Doh!!
Hugs
