Isn’t it odd how memories – apparently from nowhere – pop into your head now and then?
There I was, walking along the path with my dog, Martha – on a wet and windy sort of day -when I casually kicked a crowd of leaves and was transported back around 55 years. I’ve no idea why, but I suddenly thought about a lady called Ruby H who lived just a street away from my home when I was a child.
Maybe it was the colour of the leaves – reds and golds – that summoned her name into my brain? I don’t know if this lady is still alive or if she has passed on (as she would be in her eighties I guess) but I could see her vividly in my mind’s eye. She was a very glamorous lady – mum to two daughters, as I remember – with chestnut-bordering-on-auburn hair that she wore up.
As children we always went carol singing about a week or so before Christmas and Ruby would listen to one carol then come to the door and invite us into her kitchen to sing in the warm where she would give us a biscuit. I think it was her vivacious temperament and kindly nature (plus the big smile and film star looks) that made an impression on me, which may be why all these years later I can still see her clearly.
It makes me wonder who will remember me – if anyone – many years into the future and what for?
